Aurora Viewing Guide

Seven quick checks before you head out into the dark.

1

Escape the glare. Aim for the darkest sky you can, well outside city lights.

2

Face north. In most U.S. states, auroras sit low on the northern horizon.

3

Pick crisp nights. Clear, dry air makes faint auroras stand out much more.

4

Stay up late. Prime time is usually between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

5

Watch the Moon. A bright Moon will wash out weaker displays, especially in the south.

6

Let eyes adjust. Give yourself 15–30 minutes with no bright screens or headlights.

7

Follow alerts. Use NOAA and aurora apps for Kp readings and live storm warnings.
